Smash Cake Theme - Construction
Smash cake themes for boys are pretty interesting in the northwest United States. Our communities are proud of our outdoors, proud of our self-reliance, and don’t mind getting our hands dirty. We’ve been working with this particular family for over a year now, through multiple shoots and really appreciate their thoughts and contributions to our photography.

Because their house has been under ongoing reconstruction even prior to baby delivery, this little man’s smash cake construction theme just made sense. His room is blue and yellow and we decided that the red brick background was perfect for the portraits they wanted for their home.

I looked around and wasn’t super excited about what was available in the smash cake community, so we built our idea from scratch. The yellow banner was an easy piece, it’s a cheap cardstock party item from Hobby Lobby. The shabby cake stand is from there as well, it’s been a great addition to our collection of smash cake themes over the years.
Most of the rest of it came off of Amazon, or you’ll need to find it locally. I recommend you get the gift bags and the tissue paper at the Dollar Tree, or the equivalent in your neighborhood.
I really felt like the frosting covered paint brushes and the ladders made this set. Have your baby’s mom bring extra matching frosting, or have them get some from their cake designer and then simply dip the brushes in it.
The clear paint cans are amazing because I can just change the tissue paper and have a whole new “paint” color, and yet only have to store a few in my prop closet.
Note: I would caution you to think carefully about the “concrete” foam blocks, they were a little spendy. I bought these because we were also planning a Hulk smash cake - and I knew I could use them for both sets.

I love how reusable this set is, you can even use the ladders to shoot from after you buy them! The paint buckets will be reused in our splatter paint smash cake set.
