Smash Cake Themes - Fall Farm
Smash Cake Idea - Fun on the Farm
This smash cake set is a wonderful example of why I have an overflowing prop “closet”. Daniel used to give me hell about my second hand shopping.
I won the argument, just in case you’re keeping score…
I firmly believe that you should have a healthy mix of props from places like Hobby Lobby/ Amazon as well as sourcing props locally. This allows you to easily populate your sets with items that can be shipped directly to your door and gives you the elbow room to put your unique spin on your theme with props you find locally. It keeps your sets from looking like cookie cutter versions of everybody else’s smash cake photos. And it gives you an excuse to peruse the local antique shops every Sunday. (Pro tip #1…Kids hate antique shops so you’ll be forced to have some alone time…Bummer)
As you can see in the examples below the props are pretty much the same but if you really look at the one one the right you’ll find a couple of different items I sourced at an antique shop. I also raided my overflowing prop closet and changed out the background from brick to barn wood. Adding locally sourced props and changing out the background gives each photo an individual look while still maintaining the overall theme. This is a great way to avoid burnout when all of your clients keep requesting the same set.
For those of you who would like to put together a “Fun on the Farm” set here’s your shopping list. This list is broken down into: Things you can grab online, things to look for locally and things you should consider making yourself.
Smash Cake Ideas: Fun on the Farm
Buy online:
Buy local*:
Fake fruits and veggies
Artificial flowers
Wooden rocking horse
Steamer trunk
Teddy bears
Autumn signs
Milk bottles
Consider making:
Headbands
Tutus
Burlap banner (also available on Amazon)
Everything in the Buy local section will be available online as well, but if you’re trying to keep your cost down, and to keep your smash cake set unique, I REALLY feel you need to spend time hunting for props. You don’t want to look like everyone else.
Pro tip #2 We recommend you leave your hay bales in the plastic until the last possible moment and store them in garbage bags - they shed EVERYWHERE.
*Pro Tip #3 Don’t forget to disinfect and double check any second hand purchases for safety. You don’t want your babies to get hurt or sick.
