Just say “No” to Smashed Cake

We love Smash Cakes. Obviously, right? But what if your client doesn’t like sugar, or is looking for something more off the beaten path? Here are 5 alternative ideas to cakes for your next batch of smash cake portraits.

I was inspired by this picture from Melissa Calise of Melissa Calise Photography. There are a ton of other spagetti first birthday pictures on the internet, but the combination of the adorable chef hat and the gleam in his eye pushed this one to the forefront for me.

Pumpkin Pie

This little dude is the cutest little thing since, well, pumpkin pie. We love shooting with hay bales, but we don’t love cleaning up after them! I loved the timing on this picture and texture in all of the wood. Jami Joe Photography caught this at JUST the right moment.

Fresh Fruit

Who’s all in for a Watermelon Crawl? This set oozes simplicity, summer and manages to be girly without going over the top. The outdoor scene cuts down on your prep, so you’re really only buying a wooden box, the banner is super simple to make and you just need to add several watermelons.

Donut Delight

If your client prefers donuts over cake - why not wander outside of normal expectations and choose donuts for your next little sugar-covered rendezvous. I love the angle and design on the image on the left - and it’s great for boys or girls.

Avocado Smash Cake

This is one of the most unique ideas I’ve seen: the avocado “smash cake”. I was taken in by the unique idea - I’ve never seen one like this - and the simplicity of the set was fun, just a roll of white seamless paper, a homemade avocado banner, and a couple of props - no major investment needed. I even like sticker on the front avocado, it adds just a taste of reality - who of us HASN’T missed an avocado sticker at some point?
